To attach a flash to your lightstand and/or use an umbrella you need a swivel. Search for umbrella swivel and you will find various forms and different prices.
The best one so far is a Manfrotto ($30,- on Amazon), highly adjustable and good quality.
Note:
This is a screen capture from Amazon.com and as you might discover the swivel is shown upside down, the opening for the umbrella shaft should be on top.
No place to mount an umbrella on your light stand? That is no problem with this Manfrotto Swivel Umbrella Adapter (Lite-Tite). This adapter attaches between the light head and stand, giving a receptacle for mounting an umbrella. The adapter also tilts allowing multiple positioning of the light head and umbrella. Attachment: 17.5mm female; attachment 2: 17.5mm female; color: black; load capacity: 5.51 lbs.; material: aluminum; weight: 0.84 lbs. Link on the bottom of this page.
A second best is something like this ($20,- on Amazon)
Mount Hot Shoe Flash on a Tripod or Light Stand with Adjustable Angle 5/8″ socket to mount a flash unit to a light stand. 3/8″ tripod socket plus a 1/4″ adapter at the bottom of the mount Adjustable flash mount on top so that you can mount your flash easily Adjustable angle for different lighting purposes
The next one for $8,- is not what you want, cumbersome to adjust and cheap plastic.
IMPORTANT;
The opening for the umbrella shaft on some of the swivels is slanted. This is to let the flash-head point to the middle of the umbrella. If you attach the umbrella from the wrong side you might end up pointing the flash head to the top of the umbrella. Take a good look at that. In most cases the handle to release the the bending of the swivel should be on the right hand side while the umbrella points away from you.
