If you want to work as a professional and let your photo’s look professional, a light meter is a must, some will say “I just look at my LCD screen” that is fine and can be helpfull. However as soon as you use additional light like a flash or studiostrobe it works way faster by using a light meter. Don Giannatti has put up a free course to understand how a light meter works and how to use it. Take a look it is worth your time for sure. There are some nice practical examples in this course that let you understand how light metering works and where to meter the light. If you only use the lightmeter built into your camera watch what Don will teach you. This knowledge is a must for every serious photographer!

http://www.udemy.com/using-a-photographic-light-meter/

This course is designed for those photographers who have just begun using a hand held light meter or who may not know what to do with their meters. or why they are important and useful tools for making images.

The light meter is a device that measures the intensity of light, whether that light is being reflected from a subject (reflected light) or falling upon the subject (ambient or “incident” light). The light meter is a tool that helps a photographer create more accuracy in exposures.

We take a very close look at all the ways a light meter can help a photographer develop a stronger understanding of the light, as well as learning how the different tonalities are expressed through a light meter.

Real world examples and some simple and fun exercises will help the beginning light meter user develop good habits, and stronger lighting.

From reflected light readings to “placing the exposure” for maximum artistic presentation to using the ambient dome for flash in studio, this course is a simple to follow discussion of meters.

NOTE: We do not discuss the operation of any specific (Brand) kind of meters. You will still be required to read your manual to find out how to set your specific meter up, and the specific ways it works. But all meters DO the basic same things, and that is what we discuss on this course.

We use video and a few PDF’s to show the use of the meter in both reflective and ambient modes. There are three exercises to be done by the student that will help them learn their specific meter.

The course should be done in order, and there is over 2 hours of video content as well as PDF documents for your files.

If you are ready to learn to use a meter, to take control of your exposure this course is for you. Many photographers will tell you that ‘chimping’ is all you need to do. I disagree… there are far more reasons to use a light meter than merely exposure… and we will discuss them in this class.

The class is free… enjoy and keep shooting.

The lifetime of a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera’s shutter is typically rated by number of actuation’s. This is an important number to have for various reasons, but especially important to know when buying a used SLR camera.
CANON

I always wondered how many shutter actuation’s I had on my camera, how people found out about it, now I know, for Canon you have to go to http://eoscount.com/ and install a java applet (Only works with the 32 bits Internet explorer). Now you know it too.

NIKON
Nikon records the number of total pictures taken as part of an image’s EXIF metadata. EXIF metadata is quite simply metadata that is embedded within an image file that contains a number of attributes about the photo. Determining the total number of shutter actuation’s on your Nikon camera is as easy as getting a look at the full set of available image EXIF data.

Join Mark Wallace May 18-20, 2012 as he heads back to Seattle to teach another workshop at creativeLIVE. At “Speedlights 101” Mark walks you through everything you wanted to know about Canon and Nikon speed lights. Mark says, “Once you know what’s happening with your camera and flash you can do almost anything.”

Day One is all about understanding the principles of flash photography. Mark will give you a solid foundation for working with your speed light so you can worry less about the technical stuff and more about creating stellar pictures. Learn how to control the ambient light exposure independent of the flash exposure. You’ll learn how your speedlight meters light so you can get the exact result you imagine.

Day Two Mark shows you how to get the flash off your camera to open a whole new realm of lighting possibilities. From flash modes to modifiers, you’ll learn how to control the light in nearly any shooting situation. There will be plenty of live demonstrations and lots of time for questions from live audience members. High speed sync, rear curtain synce, bouncing the flash, controlling groups of flashes and more!

Day Three is nearly six hours of shooting demonstrations with speedlights. Mark will show you how to shoot some of the most common scenarios: portraits, indoor events, outdoor nighttime events, and group portraits. Mark will be shooting inside, outside, in bright sun and in dark rooms. Learn how to put what you learned in day one and two into practice.

Want to be in Seattle with Mark as a part of the live audience? Make a 60-second(ish) video explaining why YOU should be in the audience and post the link on twitter to @creativeLIVE with the hashtag #WallaceLIVE. Creativity is always a plus!

Even if you’re not in the Seattle audience, you can tune in live from your computer. It’s free, you can ask Mark questions and interact with a huge, worldwide community of photographers just like you.

If you can’t join us live you can pre-order a recorded version of the course for just $99! This is a steal for 3 full days of speedlight training. The price goes up to $149 at 9am May 18, so buy early to save!

See you May 18-20, 2012 at creativeLIVE!

Just received the Digital photography book part 4 written by Scott Kelby. He did it again, a ton of tips and tricks for everyday photography, from Sport, people, studio and speed-light flash-photography to lenses and video gadgets, it is full of advise how to do this stuff. I enjoyed it a lot. His awkward way of introducing a chapter will not be to the liking of everyone as it has nothing to do with what that chapter is all about. Its again a great resource. You will find some of the tips back in the workshops i give, no doubt about it.

Scott Kelby, author of The Digital Photography Book (the best-selling digital photography book of all time), is back with another follow-up to his smash best-seller, with an entirely new book that picks up right where volume 3 left off. It’s even more of that “Ah ha, so that’ s how they do it,” straight-to-the-point, skip-the-techno-jargon stuff people can really use today, and that made volume 1 the world’s best-selling book on digital photography.

This book truly has a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: “If you and I were out on a shoot and you asked me, ‘Hey Scott, I want the light for this portrait to look really soft and flattering. How far back should I put this softbox?’ I wouldn’t give you a lecture about lighting ratios, or flash modifiers. In real life, I’d just turn to you and say, ‘Move it in as close to your subject as you possibly can, without it actually showing up in the shot.’ Well, that’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned, just like I would with a friend–without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”

Each page covers a single concept on how to make your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of taking shots that look “okay,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then this is the book for you.

This isn’t a book of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With another 200 of the most closely guarded photographic “tricks of the trade,” this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

A new pocket-wizzard was announced yesterday.

The great surprise is the price, just $139 for one transceiver! (Trigger and receiver in one device)

B&H link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

This is a NON TTL transceiver (A trigger and receiver in one unit)

Some details from the B&H website:

32 Channels

Featuring 16 standard and 16 Quad-Zone Triggering channels, finding an open channel to use is simplified and efficient. Switching between channels is accomplished with one-touch operation.

Quad-Zone Triggering

You can program up to 4 working zones for remote control of flashes. This allows you the ability to wirelessly activate and deactivate your flashes, enabling you to remain in camera position without having to manually adjust lighting setups. This is ideal for using multiple lighting setups and managing remote cameras as needed.

Auto-Sensing Transceiver

When set in TxRx mode, the transceiver is able to instantly switch between transmitter and receiver modes for the greatest amount of flexibility. You can also manually override this and choose to have it act as a dedicated transmitter or receiver.

Auto-Relay Mode

When using 3 PocketWizard radios; you can remotely trigger a camera to fire and trigger a flash simultaneously. Utilizing the Auto-Sensing technology, the transceiver mounted to the camera can instantly receive a signal from an auxiliary transceiver, and then instantly convey the transmission to a remote flash. This provides a simplistic and highly efficient remote workflow.

Long Range Capability

When used in ideal conditions, this transceiver is capable of producing and receiving a signal up to 1640′ / 500m away. When conditions are not ideal for a long range transmission, Long Range mode can be used to nearly double the effective range of the signal. There is also Repeater mode, which will repeat the signal several times, increasing the possibility of a successful transmission at long range.

High Speed Capability

When in High Speed Receive mode, this transceiver is capable of triggering cameras or flashes up to 14.5 fps. Normal performance also permits triggering up to 12 fps. It is also capable of sync speeds up to 1/250 sec. for focal plane shutters and 1/500 sec. for leaf shutters.

Simplified User Interface and Design

Clearly displayed on a 1″ / 2.5cm backlit LCD, all of the channels, zones, and modes can be configured using a soft-touch keypad. The design of the transceiver also incorporates a side-view LCD for easier viewing and an internal antenna for a less obtrusive appearance.

Wide Compatibility and Connect-ability

The transceiver is easily attached to most cameras through the hot shoe, with no extraneous cables required. For attaching to remotes and lights, there is an all-in-one sync port for wide compatibility. Cables are included for attaching from miniphone to miniphone, miniphone to phono, and miniphone to PC sync for cameras without a hot shoe. It is also compatible with all PocketWizard transmitters and receivers (of the same frequency) as well as PocketWizard-enabled lighting and metering equipment. The Plus III is powered by 2 x AA batteries and can be kept up to date with firmware updates utilizing the USB port.
